Dapper Day at Disneyland!

I’m a Disneyland annual pass holder but this past weekend was my first ever Dapper Day! Dapper Day is an unofficial tradition where twice a year Disneygoers dress in their best, specifically in vintage fashions, to enjoy the park as the first fashionable guests did 60 years ago. The first day I went into the park and met some dapper people from Meetup!

My dress is a 1940s vintage original bought at Wild Man Vintage in Lawrence, Kansas. Vintage scarf from my grandmother. Swing dance shoes from DanceStore.com and socks from the Disney store.

Enjoying Disneyland and California Adventure in one of my cutest dresses was so fun, and I even waited ten minutes to get that picture with Dapper Mickey. I felt a little silly waiting in line to get a photo with a character – even though I am a full grown adult who goes to Disneyland at least twice a month. πŸ™‚

The next day brought even more fun at the Dapper Day classic car show and expo!

I loved this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air and the owner was nice enough to let us get in it. I felt like James Dean.
Dress: 1940s vintage original from Cactus Flower in Bloomington, Indiana

Shoes and parasol bought in China

Vegan leather bag: Matt and Nat
I didn’t buy these cool glasses at the expo but I thought I looked cute πŸ™‚

So in love with this bag. If I had $70 to spare, this would be mine.

With my dapper girls!
And more classic car porn:

Dapper Day was a great time but I really do wish we could just live that way more often – wear our best clothes, feel beautiful, and take pride in our appearance. And man it was cool to carry a parasol without people giving me any weird looks.

Until next year …

Outfit Post: Bomb Girl Goes to Six Flags

This outfit makes me feel like a ’40s gal who’s pitching in to help the war effort. Like sure I’ll wear pants and a button-down… but it’s gotta be cute.

Shirt: Custom-made in China (I bought the vintage buttons on Etsy and put them on myself)

Jeans: Custom, bought on Etsy

20140128-070024.jpg

I realized I never smile in my pictures so I’m trying to prove that I do actually know how.

20140128-070120.jpg

On Sunday I went to Six Flags – that’s right, I have a season pass. You should, too. It’s SEVENTY-FIVE DOLLARS to ride sick-ass roller coasters ALL YEAR LONG!

20140128-070134.jpg

The Green Lantern ride – I love it but a friend of mine characterized it as “a series of jump kicks to the chest and balls.” So I guess you’ll have to make up your own mind.

20140128-070441.jpg

Riding roller coasters is definitely one of the #1 things I want to do with my life. Hit me up if you want to go to Magic Mountain, you can find me on the Superman ride, Tatsu, or complaining about having to put my things in a locker to go on X2.

Outfit Post: Amelia Earhart

20140120-215424.jpg

For once I actually felt the desire to wear pants! My, my. I feel like Amelia Earhart in this look.

White shirt: Owned since high school

High-waisted khakis: Custom-made in China

Vintage scarf: Gift from my grandma

NASA jacket: Bought at Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida

Brown boots (unpictured): Target

I’d love to get some classic black shoes (men’s style) to wear with outfits like this. Or maybe just some saddle shoes.

This was a surprise – I knew I got a free drink for my birthday at Starbucks for being a rewards member (sign up for free or put a gift card on your phone) but I had no idea that you could get ANYTHING YOU WANTED. I assumed it would just be a small regular coffee! I got a venti soy mocha frappuccino FOR FREE. I intended on saving some for the next day but ended up drinking it all and that was my dinner. I still went to bed at a reasonable hour, caffeine just doesn’t get to me. If you like Starbucks, you should definitely sign up for their rewards program!

My fancy vintage party!

20140120-215026.jpg

To celebrate my birthday I had a fancy party where everyone was instructed to dress up in clothes inspired by the 20th century. I thought that left plenty of leeway (my friends are not vintage enthusiasts) and most people did really well!

20140120-215129.jpg

I wore my great-grandmother’s top from the 50’s, a vintage black skirt, vintage clip-on chandelier earrings, and swing dance shoes.

Here’s one of my friends sipping tea from a teacup and saucer out of my mom’s china set.

20140120-215218.jpg

Some of my guests! We had a greaser, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy, and some good old-fashioned retro glamour.

20140120-215337.jpg

20140120-215355.jpg

My new favorite picture of my old roommate and me – I think we look late 1800’s in composition and facial expression.

All in all, it was a really fun party. We had tea and coffee so the non-drinkers would have things to drink, and several types of wine for the drinkers. I made celery sticks with peanut butter in them, which surprisingly went like hot cakes. We used my mom’s wedding china, vintage wine glasses, and my great-grandmother’s 1920s silver (I had a lot of careful cleaning to do after the party was over). One beautiful vintage glass of my grandmother’s did get broken, which was really upsetting. But I’ve decided to use my nice things and the only way to keep them all unbroken is to put them in a cabinet and not touch them. And then what’s the point?

It’s My Birthday!

It’s my birthday! For fun I found some pictures of me/my birthdays throughout the years!

The card my 4-year-old brother picked out for me. It says you could look everywhere and not find a kid as good as me!

Sorry for the terrible pictures but I wanted to show you the cape I got for my birthday. It’s awesome.

20131231-014706.jpgOne day I’ll figure out how to take better pictures, I swear.

It’s not so bad turning a quarter-century old – eventually I hope to be a century old so it’s interesting to know that the first quarter is complete, that story is told. When I was born we had VHS tapes and the Cold War and now it’s all iPhones and Obama. I can’t wait to see what the next 75 years bring.

Outfit Post: Sweet Rose!

20131212-100813.jpg

I LOVE this dress.

Pink 40s dress – Wild Man vintage store in Lawrence, KS

White 70s belt – Jet Rag vintage store in LA

Pink ring – my grandmother’s

Fishnet stockings – What Katie Did

Boots – Target

20131212-100843.jpg

20131212-100902.jpg

Sorry my room’s cluttered – I feel like it never looks clean even when it is really clean because it’s so small – but I wanted you to really see the dress and this amazing 50’s sweater I found at Wild Man in Lawrence, KS. Those are strawberries!

20131212-101219.jpg

Fake lashes too, yo. I like them not too long but dark and thick. It’s a little crazy what a big effect they have.

20131212-102251.jpg

P.S. Check out what happened this morning! A SWAT team raided my next-door neighbors at 4:30 in the morning. I was up working so I turned my lights off, cracked my window, and just creeped the whole time. It was really interesting.

That’s a SWAT dude with a huge gun right next to my car! LA is fun.

Casual Vintage for a Cold Indiana Day

20131205-094439.jpg

I went and visited family in Indiana and felt COLD weather for the first time in a while! Luckily this casual 40s/50s winter outfit kept me pretty warm. I like this outfit because it feels like just the sort of thing a girl in the 40s or 50s would have worn when hanging out with her family in the cold months – it’s casual, conservative, not too fashion-forward but cute, warm, and comfortable.

Sweater – modern, my mom’s

Skirt – 50s, Jet Rag

Stockings and wool socks!

Boots – Target

20131205-094501.jpg

I love these boots. They have lace on the sides (which I really should have taken a picture of) and give me an early 1900s feel.

20131205-094516.jpg

Here’s my cousin and me! Don’t worry, I asked her if I could put her picture up. πŸ™‚

It sounds crazy, but I wore skirts and dresses the whole time I was in 20-40 degree weather and I stayed warm. Between slips, thick skirts, stockings/hose/tights and socks, you can wear more layers than you could if you just wore pants! I’ll post some more cold-weather outfits in the next few days!

New 40’s-Style Headshots!

IMG_4064

I can’t believe I’ve been MIA for so long! I’ve been out of town and busy and blablabla. I’ve still been wearing vintage, though, don’t worry. πŸ˜‰ I got some new headshots taken recently and I did my best 40’s glam – what do you think? (BTW the one above I didn’t use as a headshot because of lighting issues but I included it here because I thought it was cute!)

I feel like my hair was especially big that day but doesn’t it have a Rita Hayworth vibe? I feel like I get 90% of my fashion inspiration these days from this photo:

I will admit I’ve been having some vintage styling issues this summer:

1) When I started buying vintage it was cold out so most of my clothes are fall/winter clothes!

2) It’s hot and I don’t want to wear the more restrictive vintage styles but sometimes I don’t know how to style a vintage outfit without a girdle and stockings!

3) Too hot and sweaty to really do my hair and makeup (I don’t have A/C).

Do you guys change your vintage style at all in the summer? Have any tips for me? πŸ˜€

Outfit Post: Sophisticated Purple and Jade

Today I get to show you one of the dresses I had made in China! I had one other dress and a couple made that I’ll try and remember to take photos of soon. I showed the tailors this photo:

400px-Mccall3543

And here’s how it turned out:

IMG_4765

IMG_4768

I had to add the belt because the dress looked pretty undefined without it – they didn’t get the hip right at all and really underdid the ruching in the bust (and I think didn’t measure my bust right, as it pretty much has the effect of erasing the ruching almost altogether). That said, I think it’s still a pretty dress and it will be good for the times when I want to dress vintage without endangering one of my actual vintage dresses.

IMG_4757

I tried to take a picture where you could actually see the bodice better but I feel like my iPhone was not cooperating.

IMG_4769

IMG_4759

I was also wearing some new Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner I got and jade earrings I bought in China. I love them.

IMG_4760

And my cute barrette!

IMG_4764

And a friend of mine put up a picture on Instagram from an improv show I did. It’s funny, I think you can kind of tell how much curlier my hair gets through the day if I’m not brushing it every 20 minutes.

All in all, getting clothes made was a mixed experience. I think I wouldn’t get a dress made again because it’s easy enough to find great dresses without spending a lot of money (although repro is expensive, pretty much as a rule). I’ll check back in with the other dress and the blouses soon and let you know what I thought of those!
